A marble statue of St Elizabeth in front of the neo-Gothic church of the same name on Rózsak tere is shining anew after a clean-up. Unveiled in 1932 on the 700th anniversary of the death of the saint known as Elizabeth of Hungary, the figure had become grey with age.

The statue of St Elizabeth, created by József Damkó, stands almost seven metres high. It celebrates the saint also known as Elizabeth of Hungary, born in 1207, married at 14, widowed at 20 and dead by the age of 24. Daughter of Hungarian King András II, she spent much of her life caring for the sick.

The church dates back to 1901 and was designed by Imre Steindl, also responsible for the Parliament building.
