In a series of freshly published images, accomplished Magyar photojournalist Miklós Déri portrays vendors in living color at Rákóczi Square Market Hall in Budapest’s District VIII. Captured in an intriguing way, the photos illustrate the historic bazaar from never-before-seen angles while focusing on its key characters, the sellers who pose in front of their stalls filled with fascinating fare. Anyone who visits this semi-hidden emporium this week can meet the vendors by joining the Rákóczi Square Days celebrations, spicing up the market hall with creative programs through September 21st.

While prowling Budapest’s marketplaces, we ordinarily focus on the proffered produce and don’t pay too much attention to the market’s regular hawkers. Renowned Magyar photojournalist Miklós Déri decided to go beyond the ordinary at the Rákóczi Square Market Hall and turn his lens on the bazaar’s vendors, portraying them in an exceptional way in front of their stimulating stalls. Looking at his poignant pictures, we see a duo of fishmongers symbolically standing with a fishing net, a trio of butchers posing with oversized chunks of fresh meat, and vegetable vendors modeling arm-in-arm amid a colorful selection of crisp produce.

In a statement, Déri told Hungarian news site 444 that for this project he asked market sellers to show anything of themselves or of their shop, therefore one of the vendors donned his favorite football club’s uniform for the photo, while others decided to model with their goods. You can meet these unlikely models in person during this week’s Rákóczi Square Days, while rediscovering this beautiful bazaar.
