Presenting the cultural heritage and history of Hungarians through funny but informative thematic descriptions, the Little Hungaropedia book series – created by Magyar designer Zsófi Szabó – offers explanations behind many unique elements of life in Hungary, all enhanced with creative graphics. The six-volume series, launched in 2014, was further expanded with three more booklets in late spring, and now the newest member, the eagerly awaited Little Wine-opedia, is available in Budapest, offering humorous insight into the wonderful world of Hungarian wines.

They love a glass of good wine, and couldn’t wait to express this affection in pictures and in writing – so say the creators of the Little Hungaropedia series. For expert advice they turned to Bortársaság, and a few intoxicatingly joyous evenings of storytelling and shared experiences provided all of the necessary material for the freshest booklet of the series. The Little Wine-opedia presents Hungary’s wine heritage through stories by young writers written in a humorous and witty way, enhanced by the colorfully playful illustrations of Zsófi Szabó.

“The idea of the Little Wine-opedia lingered in our minds even when the first six volumes were released. The final inspiration was brought about by Szabina Ughy and Péter Oravecz’s weeklong trip to Tállya, a village in Northern Hungary, where they started to become truly curious about Hungarian wine culture. Together we thought that it would be important to involve Bortársaság in the writing and editing of the texts. The launch of the Little Wine-opedia was at Tábor at Millenáris, amid a truly homey, cheerful, and chatty atmosphere,” says Magyar designer Zsófi Szabó, the creator of the Little Hungaropedia series.

Besides Szabina Ughy and Péter Oravecz, Gábor Kálmán from Bortársaság also helped by adding some touches to the texts. In the booklet, which is available in English, readers can become familiar with the unique relationship of Hungarians and wine, but as a tiny teaser, here is an extract from the Little Wine-opedia: “It is considered as one of the very finest products that Hungary has to offer: bottles of Tokaji Aszú, given to dearest foreign friends or fellow Magyars on very special occasions – but exactly why is the Aszú wine so cherished? Every Hungarian has at least one bottle of it received during a remarkable life event, usually their wedding, which is carefully placed on top of the cupboard afterwards to wait for the perfect moment to open it.”

Inside, readers also find a wine dictionary and a collection of oenological misconceptions. If you are looking for a unique souvenir of your time in Hungary, or a good gift for wine fans anywhere, the Little Wine-opedia is probably a perfect choice.
