Where is it and how does it work?Close to ever-bustling Váci Street, Kajahu awaits on Petőfi Sándor Street, with the entrance located under a sign adorned with characteristic Hungarian Grey cattle. The restaurant’s name may sound familiar to some, but it’s important to note that this fresh eatery by Ferenciek Square embodies an entirely new concept compared with its previous location. Stepping inside, we see that design is everywhere – including the modern and friendly interior, the stylish gray sofas, cool lampshades, and the bar tables along the huge windows, as well as the DJ station, the show kitchen, and the signature coffee cups and lunch boxes. The ordering process is an adventure in itself: after finding the “Food” or “Drinks” section on the computer screen built into your table, first select the appropriate category, then the desired dish, and finally click on the shopping cart symbol. If you’ve asked for a refreshing rosé fröccs, for example, a nice bottle of soda water and a bottle of Figula Cabernet Sauvignon will appear in front of you in just a few minutes.Hungarian Grey cattleAs advertised by the sleek logo, reliable, top-quality gray cattle – which you might be surprised to hear is actually quite healthy – is the restaurant’s main specialty. Native to Hungary’s Alföld region, these fierce beasts are the inspiration for the restaurant’s design, also being the most important ingredient of the goulash soup, the hamburgers, and the hot dogs. We kicked off our visit with a couple of different
Hungarian Grey cattle burgers: a cheeseburger and a selection of other sandwiches, which come with potato wedges and ketchup for an extra 150 forints. The juicy cheeseburger costs 1,390 forints, and is made with a slightly sweet bun, a massive patty, some mind-blowing homemade onion jam, lettuce, tomato, pickles, cheddar, and a combination of ketchup and mustard – everything that makes a hamburger divine. The burger selection includes four mini burgers: a regular hamburger and a cheeseburger, as well as a jalapeño and bacon specialty and a grill version, all of them served in crispy toasted buns.

Other special creationsAlong with the dishes made from Hungary’s iconic livestock, the menu features various delicacies of Asian, Mexican, and Italian cuisine, and even a mysterious “Trend” category. If you don’t feel like a burger, tuck into a savory Indonesian chicken ragout with jasmine rice (1,690 HUF), a steaming bowl of penne pomodoro (1,190 HUF) or a smoked salmon fillet with a side of chickpea salad (1,990 HUF) – none of them too spicy, all of them delectable. Good news for patrons suffering from certain kinds of food allergies: gluten-free and whole-grain pastas are also available. Desserts come in different versions too: the homemade chocolate bar is totally sugar-free, but you can order the paleo version if you want; all you need to do is add a comment on the computer. From Monday through Friday, Kajahu offers a lunch menu for 1,190 forints. The top-up system is a great feature, especially for regular guests, allowing them to transfer money to their Kajahu profile before they arrive at the restaurant. A separate children’s menu with creatively named creations such as Spaghetti “Bad Boys” Bolognese and Commander Consomé will no doubt put a smile on the faces of the littlest visitors. To keep them occupied after they’ve gobbled up their meal, tap the “Kids’ corner” section for cartoons and picture books, featuring classic Hungarian characters.

Another section of the menu called “Market” is a convenient platform for doing your grocery shopping, from baked goods, meat, and vegetables to pastas and wines. A little market display in the restaurant itself features enticing goodies like strawberry jam with lavender (1,290 HUF), pear jam with fig and Tokaji wine (1,290 HUF), asparagus, and Hungarian Grey cattle salami. You can cook (YCC) is a cool new feature not particularly widespread in the catering industry: you can pre-order a selection of ingredients and cook a delicious feast with your friends at one of the designated counters within the stylish space – don’t worry, Kajahu will do the washing up for you.

We can safely say that Kajahu represents a whole new trend on the Budapest catering scene, with its one-of-a-kind technology and community-building efforts, not to mention culinary specialties like the grilled Grey cattle burger or ramson chutney.
