Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden opened its gates in 1866, which makes it one of the oldest of its kind. As well as a menagerie, the zoo is also known for its architecture, the Art Nouveau buildings of the early 1900s designed by Károly Kós and others. Visit the Palm House for its tropical birds and wildlife from the Americas – but also to admire the design of Gyula Végh. Kornél Neuschloss brings together Indian and African elements with iconic Zsolnay tiling to create an exotic home for the zoo’s elephants. All tolled, some 1,000 creatures can be observed – look out for new-borns and feeding times.

More recent attractions include the Holnemvolt Castle, which combines the vintage rides of the popular amusement park that once stood next door, with a petting zoo.
