Budapest is a city of spas, never better illustrated than in summer, when these baths become family-friendly lidos, equipped with slides, wave pools and sunbathing zones. Here we pick five of our favourites.

Surrounded by a park of ancient trees, the most beautifully located lido in Budapest is this one at Csillaghegy. Recently it has been extended, with a new spa centre, thermal pools, large sauna world and a children’s section.

Budapest’s revered Dagály was closed while the Duna Aréna swimming complex was built for the FINA world championships in 2017 and has only recently reopened. It has since been expanded with a thermal, spa and medical department. Set by the Danube, the Dagály remains a firm family favourite.

Gellért Baths

The most sumptuously decorated spa in Budapest always attracts tourists, but it is quieter during the week. The wave pool outside was the world’s first and the warmer pool also has attractive features.

Lukács Baths

The waters at the Lukács are meant to have the strongest healing powers, and this is certainly Budapest’s most versatile spa. In addition to the luxurious indoor areas, there’s an outdoor pool and two swimming pools, and you can also use the sunbathing terrace and the fitness equipment.

Palatinus Baths

At this spa on Margaret Island, you can even sweat in the geothermal sauna, but you should also enjoy the sunshine outside on the giant slides or in the swimming, adventure and wave pools.
