Budapest is full of talented local artists, whose unique art styles we love to see represented amid the endless deluge of cookie-cutter retail. Today we check out one-of-a-kind ceramic shops in the city, whose charming, and sometimes thought-provoking pieces are a welcome addition to our homes. Whether they are practical or purely decorative, they are certainly anything but ordinary!

Rebu Ceramics

Rebeka Rácz has a master’s degree in design theory, and soon found herself interested in the world of clay. Already she has dabbled in both decorative and utilitarian objects, which often hold a mirror up to the face of consumer society. In fact, she is self-taught in ceramics, and she says that “the irregularity, and lack of perfection in the traditional sense” plays an important role in her works. Through her pieces, she also draws attention to the fact that it is sometimes worth questioning our habits, and what society deems acceptable or normal in our daily lives. She says, “I try to live a life like my objects: they work, but not necessarily in the usual way”.

Susu Keramika

The hand-built, extraordinary ceramics of the joint brand established by Szaffi Asbóth and Flóra Bodnár fuse simple shapes with intricate designs and paintings. Both artists are obsessed with colour and shapes, which is clear when looking through their combined catalogue. The pastel drawings are a hallmark of Susu Keramika, combined with splashes of gold and recurring motifs of leaves, palm trees, birds and other animals. The two designers have similar tastes and personalities, while also finding new ways to inspire and challenge each other.

Kokomo

In her latest project, Eszter Glaser is mixing together the three things she loves: plants, ceramics and the Beach Boys song Kokomo. Eszter’s work is recognisable for her distinctive use of lines, colours and patterns, and draws further inspiration from the Japanese style of ikebana. Her sculptural objects suggest a “postmodern feeling of life”, and are the perfect household decoration, either accompanied by a handful of flowers, or simply on their own as a statement accent. "With these items,” says Eszter, “I want people to create beautiful things, using my ceramics as well”.

Csaba Klement

Csaba is a graphic illustrator who is best known for his GIFs and animated films, but he has long wanted to bring his figures out of the digital world and into the tangible. The process started with prints, flipbooks, badges and printed canvas bags, but it was while experimenting with ceramics a year ago that he felt he had truly discovered the right form for his “little creatures”. The funny dinosaurs, smiling blobs and the recent parade of unicorns truly bring the artist’s creations to life.

Virágéknál

For Virág Papp, creation is one of the most important forms of self-expression. Already she has featured her work on classic canvas bags, T-shirts and, most recently, in the form of hand-poke tattoos, which have become very popular. Virág is not motivated by the pursuit of perfection, but rather by the display of the process that takes place within it. She loves honesty and raw, clean designs, and has been experimenting with ceramics for some time, finding excitement in watching her figures come to life. “Although I don’t plan to sit next to the clay full-time,” she says, “I  think I’ll keep it in my work”.
