The best alternative Christmas markets and design fairs in Budapest

The Hungarian National Museum celebrates the holidays with a colorful programme each weekend, featuring a folk art fair in the building, Christmas delicacies in the garden, and workshops for the little ones. 

• Date: 26 November to 24 December 2022 – weekends

Thanks to the cooperation of the 13th District Municipality, Attila Nemesvölgyi, and Babka Deli, the real Christmas spirit has arrived to Újlipótváros, as well. There is an ice rink where special gastronomic experiences are also offered, while a nearby shop features delicious surprises (such as babka and bejgli), a Christmas market, and other gastronomic activities.

Purchase some small artworks as gifts from the artists of the Faur Zsófi Gallery at the art fair. Part of the Slow Xmas Shopping and Themed Streets of Budapest Christmas programme, this event is highly recommended for those who want to celebrate Christmas a bit more slowly and intimately.

For Christmas, Etele Plaza will be home to the pop-up shop of the Ajándék Terminál, where you can buy products from around 80 Hungarian designers. This one might be a little further away from the city centre, but with it focusing on sustainability and unique, small-series products, it is worth the trip.

The Czakó team contacted their favourite creators and organised one of the cutest Christmas markets in 2022. Featuring products by young Hungarian designers, live music, and mulled wine and Dampfnudel (steamed dumplings), courtesy of Czakó Kiosk, the Czakó Kert Christmas Fair will offer cool gifts, bejgli, and a Christmas tree, as well as exciting prints, graphics, scarves, and ceramics.

Date: 16 December 2022 (3 pm - 8 pm), then the weekly farmers' market is taking over on Saturday and Sunday

On the last weekend of the Advent period, 130 artists will be showcasing their work at the WAMP Christmas Market. Although the entrance fee is HUF 500, this amount is deducted from your purchase at the WAMP workshops, which are also worth paying attention to, alongside the musical and gastronomic specialities.

Kiskertpiac (Plant and Natural Design Market), a dog-friendly location, will be hosted at Anker Alley's craft beer bar, the Madhouse. The monthly event is all about plants and flowers, but this time the focus is on Christmas. They will be offering nature-friendly gifts and special food and drinks.

Makers' Market Budapest is a monthly fair, where you can get your hands on contemporary, artsy and designer products made by Hungarian designers. While at it, you can also have a chat with them and learn more about the items, which can also make a beautiful present for Christmas. Their upcoming event is on Sunday at Larus Rendezvényközpont (1124 Budapest, Csörsz utca 18/B). The Market awaits you with 60 super designers, acoustic concerts, and workshops.

One of the newest places on Margit Boulevard, Montage is also taking part in the Christmas preparations. They are hosting a fair over the last Advent weekend too, where you can buy gifts from 10 exhibitors. They will also be offering bejgli and homemade cakes.
