With malls and stores busier in the run-up to Christmas, outdoor markets are particularly attractive these days. And, given the large number of small-batch producers and artisans displaying their wares, patronising them helps support local businesses. Here are our five favourites, four open at weekends, one on Thursday afternoons. Some even offer special treats for Advent!

1/5

Csörsz

The city’s only certified organic market is where vendors with a valid licence meeting strict organic farming conditions may set up between 6.30am and 1pm on Saturdays. As Christmas approaches, festive delicacies will also appear among the products, starting with traditional bejgli cake, continuing with gingerbread, candles, teas to summon the Christmas atmosphere and Yuletide sweets. On the last two weekends of Advent, 14 and 23 December, the Kiskert Market, once held at the Anker’t bar, brings craftsmen and artisans together to showcase their wares at the XMAS POP-UP store.

2/5

Czakó

In the garden of the oldest house in the Tabán area, the Czakó Garden hosts fruit and vegetable stalls, as well as selections cheeses, meats and other delights every Saturday from 8am to 3pm. On Advent Sundays, Christmas-style mini markets showcase craft exhibitors, takeaway freshly baked food, mulled wine, homemade strudel and beigli cake, as well as Advent wreaths.

3/5

Pancs gastro market

Every Sunday from 9am to 2pm, vendors unpack their wares in the yard of the Élesztőház: honey, smoked meats, cheeses, sourdough breads, organically grown vegetables and fruit, and many other delicious and practical items. Now, this Sunday, 6 December, there will also be a Santa’s burger show with juicy takeaway treats.

4/5

Római-part market

It has only been running for three years, but the farmers’ fair on the Római embankment has become a must every Saturday from 8am to 1pm for everything from farmed chicken to sheep’s curd. Winter ingredients, handicraft gifts, decorations and mouth-watering snacks from flaming to grilled sausages can also be found.

5/5

Zugló Bread Association

This young initiative already has a stable fan base in District XIV, with a pre-order system also helping to build a community of customers. On Thursdays, from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, customers are welcome to browse the courtyard of the AZTA Community Craft and DIY Workshop with sourdough baked goods, cheeses, vegetables, fruit, organic products and many other natural goodies.
