Bestia
For those looking to watch the Super Bowl downtown, there could be few more central locations than the Basilica – or places with better choices of beer than Bestia. The dozen-strong draught selection showcases the most renowned Hungarian craft brewers – Mad Scientist, Horizont, Fehér Nyúl – as well as everyone’s favourite, Brewdog. Food-wise, Bestia is known for its steak, prime American, Argentine or Australian, but its burgers aren’t shabby either and the BBQ chicken wings come in sharing portions of 12. Make sure to book a table – things get going from 10pm onwards.

Champs
At the edge of the Jewish Quarter, the Champs cellar bar has long been the key port of call for local sports fans. Wherever you turn here, there’s a TV, offset by flags and framed shirts, with invariable gaggles of Brit aficionados of the round-ball game. Sunday night will be given over to Super Bowl LIII, when the traditionally raucous atmosphere here and hulking Champs cheeseburgers should temper the disappointment at the limited beer choice. Guinness might be the way to go, particularly if you’re rooting for the Patriots.

A Grund
Tailgate menus and English-language streaming, including those $5-million, 30-second TV commercials, are promised at A Grund, throwing a Super Bowl party for the seventh time of asking. The more ravenous can ignore the burgers, BBQ chicken breasts, hot dogs and constantly replenished snack bowls around the table, and hone in on Brent’s double Super Bowl menu, involving a double-burger stuffed with cheese, topped with homemade BBQ sauce and served with a side of fries. Oof!! American Coleslaw and BBQ baked beans are among the other accompaniments. Registration via info@agrund.hu is required but admission is free.

I55 American Bar & Restaurant
The local home of the Chicago deep-dish pizza, the American-style I55 will keep the nachos platters coming and Buds flowing all night for Super Bowl Sunday. Named and themed after Interstate 55 that cuts through America from New Orleans to Chicago, I55 is the brainchild of Dávid and Péter Kiss, who drove all along it looking for culinary inspiration. Here the I55 burger comes with red onions, mushrooms, camembert cheese and smoky sauce – though it may be hard to resist the Almost Heaven 14-hour smoked BBQ brisket. Touchdowns can be celebrated with a shot of Maker’s Mark, JD or Buffalo Trace whiskey.

InGame
Neither pub nor restaurant, InGame is one of Budapest’s top esports bars, where the big projector usually streams gamers’ broadcasts. For Super Bowl Sunday, though, it’s gridiron all the way, allowing you to kick back on one of the comfortable leather sofas, select your fave from the wide selection of whiskeys, and munch on a hot dog or two.

Rocky’s
Opened beside Gozsdu Udvar in 2018, Rocky’s is Budapest’s latest and arguably best sports bar. It takes as its inspiration the laudable concept of a mancave popular in the States, where the head of the family has his own TV, PlayStation, beers and minibar, with pool table optional. Here the lords of the house can relax in peace, where women cannot interfere, and mates can pass time in idle conversation over beers and football gawping. Ergo, Rocky’s. For Super Bowl Sunday, it comes into its own, with eight huge monitors tracking the action while punters may choose from nine types of beer and 33 types of whiskey. It’s not all booze – on the night, a 5 Yard Menu comprises a pile of chicken wings, a burger and three pints (5,000 HUF), the 8 Yard option the same, only with five pints (8,000 HUF). Book your table on +36 30 647 7003.

Stifler
Essentially a US-style sports bar with a large space for pool tables, Stifler has branched out around the city, though its main venue remains on the Grand Boulevard. There’s plenty of room to spread, with tables a-plenty – though you can reserve one on +36 20 200 1000. Affordability is the key here, the burgers, the hot dogs, the heart-stopping Stifler sausages, while the most modest Hungarian beer on tap is under 500 forints for a big measure. Plus, if the game’s pretty over by half-time, you can always knock out a few games of pool.
