If you don’t speak Hungarian but want to visit the cinema in Budapest, it can be difficult to find out which films are showing in English (or another foreign language). Luckily, there are many cinemas and film clubs screening newly released films and classic flicks with English subtitles and/or with the original audio. Each month we share some movies to check out with links to the show times too, so you’ll know exactly which cinema to head to. All you need to do is grab some popcorn!

Purple Rain

Based loosely on his own life story, Prince’s film debut in Purple Rain cast him as The Kid, the talented but troubled musician in Minneapolis struggling to make it big with his band, the Revolution. The film was a box office hit, and possessed a phenomonal soundtrack (including Oscar-winner “When Doves Cry”) that forever altered the course of his career. Many fans and critics consider the music of Purple Rain signature work, spawning numerous hit singles that would dominate airwaves for years to come. A rousing contemporary addition to the classic backstage musical genre.

Night On Earth

Five cities. Five taxicabs. A multitude of strangers in the night. Jim Jarmusch assembled an extraordinary international cast of actors (including Gena Rowlands, Winona Ryder, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Beatrice Dalle, and Roberto Benigni) for this hilarious quintet of tales of urban displacement and existential angst, spanning time zones, continents, and languages. Jarmusch’s lovingly askew view of humanity from the passenger seat makes for one of his most charming and beloved films. Though it may take a while to get his gist, hang in there; by the time Tom Waits growls his lovely closing waltz over the credits, Jarmusch has shown us moments most filmmakers don’t even notice.

The Neon Demon

Nicolas Winding Refn’s latest and best, The Neon Demon, is the culmination of his decades-long fascination with human nature in its darkest, most destructive form. It is a gorgeous, grisly work which holds a mirror up to modern society’s corroded moral core. The story centers around Jesse (Elle Fanning), an aspiring model who moves to Los Angeles, but soon her youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has. A horroristic mix of Dario Argento, David Lynch and Stanley Kubrick, The Neon Demon is one of the most unique films of the season.

Warcraft

The adaptation of Blizzard’s legendary (MMO)RPG, Warcraft is an expensive, high-fantasy epic reminiscent of The Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones, with a whiff of John Carter about it. It’s a complex, jargon-heavy, deadly earnest battle epic, short on star power and with more than a touch of 1970s fantasy art about it. But if you are newcomer to its universe, you'll have a lot to get up to speed with here. The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people, and their home. Director Duncan Jones, a self-professed Warcraft fan, has clearly put a lot of love and care into the movie and it paid off.

The Nice Guys

The Nice Guys takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, when down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and hired enforcer Jackson Healy (Russell Crowe) must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power. Director Shane Black’s latest films is like a buddy comedy from a bygone era, but he also added the extra courtesy of a knowing script and the irresistible chemistry of its leads. If you were missing the comedy-noir vibe of Black’s Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, don’t miss this! An absolute joy of a film.

Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass

In Disney’s Alice Through The Looking Glass, an all-new spectacular adventure featuring the unforgettable characters from Lewis Carroll's beloved stories, Alice (Mia Wasikowska) returns to the whimsical world and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp). Directed by James Bobin, who brings his own unique vision to the spectacular world Tim Burton created on screen in 2010 with Alice In Wonderland, the follow-up is a lighthearted sequel, a spirited fantasy adventure. An enjoyable return to Wonderland, so to say, perfect for the summertime.
