Most of us wear T-shirt and let's admit it, this cotton cloth is not just an easy staple of our daily look but also a form of self-expression. Budapest is loaded with up-and-coming designers who make cool T-shirts, so it's about time we introduce them ahead of summer – especially because there are brands here you surely won't have heard of yet. But that changes now!

A small history of T-shirts:

The first T-shirts were worn as underwear by European soldiers fighting in WWI. That's how the idea made its way to America where it became popular, especially after Marlon Brando wore one in A Streetcar Named Desire (as did James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause). And so the cloth finally found its way into people's wardrobes. Because both Marlon Brando and James Dean were seen as rebels, as punk kids, T-shirts became a symbol of decadence and a kind of rebellion. T-shirts used to be pure white until the 70s, when texts and patterns started to appear on them. From that time, T-shirts were more than a piece of clothing, it also marked social and cultural preferences. Nowadays, there literally wouldn't be a wardrobe without a few T-shirts in it.

Printa

The shop, which is known for its quality prints, well-chosen design items, workshops and its water-based silkscreen studio has recently started its own brand of recycled/eco-friendly clothes, AWARE by Printa. The newest collection, Tangram, is named after an ancient toy, and its geometrical forms inspired the design of the T-shirts. There are T-shirts for both adults and children.

Aarion

In 2010, three youngsters in Budapest decided to start their own T-shirt project and brand. After a lot of hard work, the idea became a reality and now they are up to their 10th collection. According to Marci Király and Dani Márkus, Aarion is characterised by both the simplicity and the filth of Budapest. The brand, which regularly organise parties too, has a unique view about fashion and how it should work; they make only 20-30 pieces out of every cloth in each collection.

We've found these map-inspired T-shirts in the summer collection of one of our favourite fresh-faced Hungarian brands, Bridget & Olivia. The storytelling collection was inspired by Ridley Scott's cult classic, Thelma & Louise, which tells the the story of two female fugitives on the run. The Arizona desert inspired the colours and the silhouettes, and it can be found on the map-themed T-shirts too. Apart from the super cool man and women pieces, the brand also created a special capsule collection, consisting of T-shirts designed for the Hungarian rock 'n' roll band, Ivan & The Parazol.

Nandi

This really fresh-faced brand offers only T-shirts and jewellery. All of the pieces have a special, childish vibe and just looking at them will surely put a smile on your face – after all, they were made with love, in a good mood. All of the T-shirts have hand-made graphics and watercolour paintings on it. The brand has prepared three collections. The main characteristics of the newest models are pastel colours and lately the first screen-printed T-shirts have been released too. The design of these T-shirts are never the same, since they are created with homemade signets.

POPO

POPO is the brand of four young people that were introduced to the public two years ago at the Gombold újra! competition. The brand designs both clothes and bags, but now they have a really cool T-shirt collection too. In the studio of Barbara Badacsonyi-Móga, Réka Sümegi, Apol Temesi and Borbála Vértesi, every collection is based on a story. The newest, summer pieces for example were influenced by the Town Musicians Of Bremen, and it's not by accident that you can spot the main characters – a dog, a donkey, a cat and a rooster on the T-shirts.
