The film takes places in a tiny Hungarian village during World War II. The son of the reputable fire-chief who fights on the front announces to his parents that his commander, who is on the verge of a nervous breakdown, wishes to spend the holidays in their home. For their son's sake the Tóths endure all the whims of the insomnia-ridden man, making paper boxes day and night. However, when the unwelcomed guest suddenly returns after having said goodbye, the terrorized Tóth loses his temper and cuts him in four with the box-cutting machine...
