For European Heritage Days on 19-20 September, visitors can enter many buildings which are normally closed during the year. The event, also known as the Weekend of Open Gates, was initiated by the European Council in 1984. Hungary joined the celebration in 1999, and ever since the aim has been to draw attention to the beauty of its architectural heritage, as well as to shed light on its vulnerable nature. The event is free.
