Thursday, 7 July

Habfürdő
In this groundbreaking Hungarian animation from 1979, a window dresser abandons his bride-to-be at the altar for a nurse, also invited to the wedding. Chaos duly ensues. This 80-minute cartoon cult comedy broke many taboos at the time, but also broke the long and distinguished career of animator György Kovásznai, who died shortly afterwards while making his second full-length animated feature. At this screening of Habfürdő (‘Bubble Bath’) at the Bem cinema, English subtitles may help you understand the dynamics of domestic bliss in Hungary. From 7pm. More details

Saya Noé
Performing her own electro pop with a soupçon of hip hop and trap, Saya Noé announced her presence on the international stage with the EP Taboo in 2019, then followed up with debut LP Museum of Sins. Here she warms up for her show at the Exit festival on Friday with minimal instrumentalist Solére. More details

Elvis
Being shown in cinemas across Budapest, Baz Luhrmann’s biopic shows the story of the King through the eyes of the man often perceived to be the villain of the piece, his manager, Colonel Tom Parker. Tom Hanks gives a memorable performance as Parker, Austin Butler inspired a long standing ovation at Cannes for his portrayal of the man himself. Screened at the cultish Művész cinema in English with Hungarian subtitles at the same times all weekend, 2.30pm, 5.30pm and 8.30pm. More details

Alex Torres Trio
Having just released his debut album, the appropriately named Reborn, Peruvian guitarist Alex Torres is playing a showcase launch with his trio at the House of Hungarian Music. Visitors can expect a lively, original blend of Latin and flamenco sounds – and admission is free! More details 

ДEVA  
Дeva, aka Dorina Takács, only recently appeared on the Hungarian music scene but she already has several successes to her credit. Her special music guides you to an ancient land, where soft sounds, silky pulsating bass and polyphonic mantras are seasoned with the lyrics of Hungarian folk songs. In January, she received the Music Moves Europe award at the Dutch Eurosonic festival, and her debut album Csillag was also released. Her show will be opened by the fusion psychedelic act hari_drama. The Hive
In the intimate surroundings of the 300-capacity Volt Lokál at the Akvárium Klub, GEST from the esteemed UK drum & bass label Shogun Audio and Molecular of Bristol’s Sofa Sound kick some action at The Hive. 11pm-6am. More details

Saturday, 9 July

Gardrób communal fair  
On the second Saturday of July, in the ELTE Gömb Hall, you can sell your clothes banished to the depths of your wardrobe and possibly pick up a never-worn dress set to be your summer favourite. More details

Festival of Chariots 2022
Ratha-yātrā
, or the Festival of Chariots, is one of the oldest and grandest in India, attracting some 1.7 million people every year. The event has been held for more than 50 years in many western cities, too. Now, after a gap of two years, the celebration takes place once more at Vörösmarty tér and then moves to City Park. The main theme of this year's festival is peace, and there will also be concerts, performances, henna painting, children's events, philosophical discussions and an Indian flea market. More details

Monet, Gauguin, Pissarro in the Gallery
The first section of the two-part exhibition, From Delacroix to Vasarely, is the subject of a guided tour in English being offered by the Hungarian National Gallery on Saturday, 9 July. Over the course of an hour, Monet, Gauguin, Pissarro in the Gallery will cover Late Romanticism to Symbolism. Buy admission (HUF 1,500) by adding a supplement to your standard entrance ticket for temporary exhibitions. More details

Bal de rue
On Saturday, the French Institute organises its traditional annual street party to celebrate Bastille Day with music, dance, wine and food. Adding to the ambience will be the newly opened Bistrot français, whose lovely terrace spreads out by the Danube. You can take part in an art session, with joint works related to the building's 30th anniversary. Among the performers will be acclaimed French-American singer Anna Majidson, DJ OIEE spinning French electro and a surprise guest.
