Two more terminals will be operating at Budapest Airport before the end of the decade. Work has already started on renovating historic Terminal 1, nearer to town than currently operational Terminal 2 and right opposite the nearest train station serving the airport. Plans are also ready for completely new Terminal 3, expected to be functioning by 2028.
In recent years, Budapest Airport has spent almost 70 billion forints on development, and investments will continue with the construction of Terminal 3 and the renovation of Terminal 1.
In the last three years at Terminal 2, 14 passenger gates with 2,500 extra seats have been built, air freight has a new base and the baggage network has been improved significantly.
Preparations for the reopening of Terminal 1 began in
2021 and it should be greeting its first passengers by the summer of 2024. This
was the original airport terminal first opened in 1950, renovated in 2007 by an
award-winning design faithful to its post-war architecture then closed in 2012.
That same year, Hungarian state airline Malév collapsed, leaving Hungary
without a national carrier. Since then, Polish airline LOT has established a
base at Budapest Airport for long-haul flights and will reintroduce its New
York route in June.
Since 2012, Terminal 2 has been the only one in operation, comprised of two facilities alongside each other, Terminals 2A and 2B. As the airport’s rail terminal stands opposite Terminal 1, closed for the last decade, public transport consists of buses into town.
Construction of a Terminal 3 is now under way, with plans in place and a deadline date of 2028.
