In a bid to encourage bicycle travel and assess its popularity, city transport company BKK is eliminating the need to buy a cycle pass or ticket when travelling on the network. The measure will run for a three-month trial period every weekend from September.

In the capital and surrounding areas, bicycle transport has been allowed only on valid lines with an accompanying ticket. This rule is now changing – on an experimental basis – from September to early December and only at weekends.

The measure will affect all lines which already allow bicycle transport: all Tatra-type trams and Buda routes 17, 41, 56A, 59 and 61, bus lines 65-165, trolleybus 77, the cogwheel railway, HÉV suburban trains H5, H6, H8, H9 and the D14 boat connecting Csepel with Soroksár. The H7 line will not be included as renovation work on Kvassay Bridge is already affecting travel conditions.

The three-month test period provides an opportunity for the relevant authorities to assess how many more people use the bicycle transport service due to the significant discount.
