Already tested out this summer, a free beach by the banks of the Danube at Római-part in Óbuda will be permanent next year, with swimming in the river allowed. Until now, this had been banned in Budapest, mainly due to the water quality, since improved in recent years.
In an initiative backed by urban activists VALYO and local environmentalists Maradjanak Fák (‘Keep the Trees’), Római-part, a section of the Danube embankment in Óbuda, will have a permanent free beach in 2021.
On International Danube Day this June, families, couples and dog owners were able to relax in the river when the Római-part became a temporary beach. Since, then, the local council has been working on a proposal to make the arrangement more permanent in 2021. The section concerned is a defined area close to where Rozsgonyi Piroska utca meets the shore, close to popular outdoor bars and eateries.
More concrete details, and a projection on the future of the area, are currently being worked out, with announcements due by the end of November.
