The Király Baths, which began renovation in 2017, are unable to reopen after the mandated coronavirus closures, as the spa’s condition has deteriorated drastically. Without the necessary funds to continue work, its future is unclear.
Renovation efforts were announced back in 2017 to modernise and expand the Király Baths, including a new 20-metre pool, saunas, changing rooms and a relocated main entrance. The spa was first constructed in the 16th century, during the Turkish occupation of Hungary. The current structure dates to the early 1800s, last renovated in the 1950s. The most recent restoration was supposed to be completed by this year.
Renovation works have lagged since the plans were announced in 2017, and a new announcement Termál Online has made it clear that continued efforts have been postponed indefinitely. Ildikó Szűts, CEO of Budapest Gyógyfürdő, said that this year’s sales will only account for about 40% of last year’s turnover, meaning that renovation works can no longer be afforded. And without the much-needed renovations, the spa cannot reopen in its current form. The Király Baths “have not had an ÁNTSZ license since 2018,” says Ildikó.
