No, there’s no parties or street celebrations but there’s plenty of music and entertainment being streamed online for New Year’s Eve. Starting with today, December 30, here are some of our favourites.

30 December

The music industry has suffered more than most during the pandemic, with concerts and festivals cancelled across the board. Perennial favourites KISCSILLAG had to forego their 15th anniversary show, and are making up for it with a major performance at 8pm on 30 December aboard the TRIP boat. The concert will be aired live in HD, for which tickets can be purchased to support the band.

Also on 30 December, from 7.30pm at Müpa, the traditional annual concert by Hungarian folk legends Muzsikás will be broadcasting live. Several talented soloists will be featured this year, including Mária Petrás from Moldavia, and Hanga Kacsó, winner of the folk music competition Fölszállott a páva. Also on the docket is the Kossuth Prize-winner András Berecz, as well as young dance stars, István Berecz and János Appelshoffer.

Another performance airing from the TRIP boat is the online premiere of the Budapest Bár NYE concert. Tune into this special two-hour performance with the band specialising in pre-war Budapest cabaret tunes, with a few folk and Gypsy sounds thrown in. The performers encourage everyone to watch the broadcast where you can “dance, sing, hum, go crazy, laugh or cry in fancy dress or your tatty pyjama bottoms!” Before they perform, Péterfy Bori & Love Band give a quick show from 10.20pm.
