In an initiative just announced by Budapest transport company BKK, cyclists will be allowed to board with their bikes on several popular tram routes. In addition, thanks to a pilot scheme running until December, those travelling with two wheels at weekends don’t an extra ticket, again on certain lines only. These moves are in line with a raft of measures to make Budapest more cycle-friendly.

From this week, bicycles can be transported on all Tatra-type trams in Budapest, which means lines 1, 12-14 and 28, among others. A cycle pictogram shows which vehicles are valid for travel.

Cyclists could already transport their bikes on more than 140 low-floor trams, mainly on the Buda side. This has now been increased to 320, or around 30% of the vehicles currently in service.

Trams may carry a maximum of one bicycle per carriage, to be placed at the far end and secured with velcro. Passengers must have valid tickets or passes for themselves and their bike. To encourage the combination of travel options, until December, bicycles can be transported free of charge at weekends on certain lines. Further information can be found on the BKK website.
