To mark the centenary of Trianon, the post-war treaty that changed Hungary’s borders, Budapest is to observe a minute’s silence today, 4 June, at 4.30pm. Public transport will stop and mayor Gergely Karácsony is also asking motorists, cyclists and pedestrians to observe the same.

The Treaty of Trianon, signed on 4 June, 1920, reshaped Hungary and cut the size of the pre-war kingdom by around two-thirds. More than three million Magyars outside the new borders, most notably in Transylvania, no longer lived within Hungary, whose size is more or less the same today. The issue is still seen as contentious.

Budapest mayor Gergely Karácsony has asked that at 4.30pm today, the city should hold “a one minute’s silence, let life start again by being a little closer together”.
