In June, musicians from the Budapest Festival Orchestra will perform mini-concerts in the courtyards and stairwells of residential buildings across the city – all you have to do is write an e-mail to ask a chamber orchestra to come and play at your behest.

Although audiences have yet to return to concert halls, people still need music during the shutdown. Members of the prestigious Budapest Festival Orchestra plan to visit more than 200 residential houses around Budapest, twice a week through June. The initiative is a collaboration between the BFO, the Centre for Contemporary Architecture and Budapest100, an urban project that throws open to the public the doors of otherwise hidden buildings and courtyards over a weekend in May.

Recently, Budapest100 celebrated its tenth anniversary with a virtual tour of picturesque staircases and courtyards

BFO's free mini-concerts will take place on Sundays and Mondays in the closed courtyards of residential houses and in inner gardens between houses. Locals can enjoy the 10-15 minute performances from their windows, balconies and gangways. With health and safety in mind, the mini-concerts will not be open to the public, just for the residents of each particular house. To apply, write to szerenad@bfz.hu.

“Please, as many of you as possible, listen to our music from your home – we just ask for a little smile and applause in return!” – says BFO musical director Iván Fischer.

Fischer also points out that the orchestra’s online weekday Quarantine Evenings have now surpassed 50 performances, and that every other weekend they will be giving online Cocoa Concerts for children.
