Born out of the owners’ love of new-wave java, Pantry Brunch & Coffee has just opened on Dohány utca, allowing customers to create breakfast from three, five or seven menu variations.

Taking its name from the English of Agatha Christie books, Pantry is a new breakfast bar at the downtown end of Dohány utca. Dávid Szabó and Réka Papp – owners and concept developers – have been working in the hospitality industry for some time and long wanted to open their own space.

As David’s forte has been in specialty cafés, that’s the direction they wanted to take. Experience told them that they needed to add food to the coffee offering, so they decided on the breakfast concept.

With more and more breakfast spots around the city centre, they wanted to find something new and so they delved into their hospitality past. David had seen that half the guests like to change at least one element from the breakfast varieties on offer – eggs but no bacon, ham with scrambled eggs not fried, not to mention the different food intolerances. So their concept was that they could offer combined breakfasts from scratch.

From the items on the menu, you can choose from three (1,900 HUF), five (3,290 HUF) or seven (4,590 HUF) elements. The different main categories – eggs, meat, salad, spreads, baked goods and desserts – cover three or four choices that can be combined smoothly. For the price of an average brunch, you get several small portions instead of one big spread. So you can skip the bread with your ham and eggs and order a portion of vinaigrette green salad instead. Or eat three kinds of meat with your fried eggs, or combine a fruit salad with your smoothie and fruity oatmeal to make sure you have your daily vitamin intake.

Although due to the nature of these meals, Pantry does not serve brunch but breakfast, you can roll up any time of day until four or so in the afternoon. If you need anything more, you can opt for the 'sharing' experience and even enjoy the whole menu.

Since the idea of the Pantry came from the concept of a café, coffee is important. With everyone following African trends in specialty cafés, here they serve Latin American – Brazilian and Guatemalan – coffee, not Ethiopian. The main reason for this is that many people ask for milk with their coffee in the morning, and for citrusy, sour African coffees, neither traditional nor plant-based milks really go.

The food is perfectly decent, from simple scrambled eggs or bacon to a healthy smoothie and fruity oatmeal, and since the menu will vary with the seasons, you won’t have to worry about getting bored with these choices first thing in the morning.
