Brimming with pubs, cafés and bars, Budapest’s central Madách tér is a popular afternoon hangout and nightspot for sinking drinks among cyclists, dog owners and anyone who likes a bit of sunshine. And now, Blitz Konyha has moved in to satisfy the need for comfort food, too.

Konyha has long been a quintessential part of the square, but suffered from a rapid turnover of chefs. Now a new team is reconfiguring the place, changing the interior and offering a more thought-out gastronomic selection with Blitz Kitchen.

A few white tiles, and a counter with green tiles and a black marble top revamp the milieu, but worry not, it’s nothing too fancy. Blitz Konyha has always focused on comfort food and is still not wavering from its initial purpose.

The pizzas are not tagged Neapolitan, Roman or anything specific – they are rather referred to as Blitz-style. The dough is left to rise for 48 hours, which results in a thin and very crispy base, plus special toppings. Margherita is available for those who don’t like to experiment, but the menu offers several kinds of tomato- and mascarpone-based options.

We tried Springbreak (2,250 forints), a mascarpone-based pizza with mozzarella, bacon and spring onions, and Marrakesh (2,250 forints), topped with paprika, mozzarella, goats’ cheese, onions and lemon. It’s an unusual combination but works very well.

The rest of the menu is divided into cold bites and oven-made dishes. Our recommendations are the fish platter that comes with three different kinds, and another with two salads, cheese and cold cuts.

From the oven, you can order trout, mac’n’cheese, pulled beef and lamb balls, and even apple crumble. Every dish is created from decent-quality ingredients, flavourful but not too forced.

Given its excellent selection, Blitz is planning to hold themed evenings with guest winemakers. Lazy Sunday cinema, talks and live music sessions are also in the pipeline.
