Budapest has a starring role in another successful movie filmed here – only this time, it’s for the Chinese market. ‘The Rookies’ has been filling cinemas in the Far East since the summer. The locations will be familiar to local audiences here, as will one of the main characters, played by Milla Jovovich of ‘Zoolander’ fame.
Known in Chinese as 素人特工,The Rookies stars twice GQ Man of the Year Wang Talu as an extreme sports enthusiast who joins up with three other amateur agents to tackle an international smuggling gang.
Their derring-do involves a high-speed car chase in Szentendre – if such a thing is possible – and past famous sights such as Keleti station, Liberty Bridge, the Castle District and Vajdahunyad Castle in the City Park.
With attractive tax breaks and expert film crews, Budapest is now one of the world’s most popular choices for movie locations. The latest, Black Widow starring Scarlett Johansson, will hit screens in Budapest and the States in May 2020.
