With past guests including Mike Myers and Rowan Atkinson, The Studios has a quality pedigree as far as comedy is concerned. This month, they hold their popular Laugh Budapest Laugh! live show twice on consecutive nights, 7 and 8 May. This time, compere Dave Thompson shakes things up with JoJo Smith and Paul T Eyres. Expect self-deprecating jokes, straight-talking cynical wit and laughter by the bucketload.
London's JoJo Smith has gone from open spots to late-night TV personality and from global internet fame to international comedy performer over the past 26 years. With a life full of stories worth telling, JoJo should surprise and amuse in equal measure. Alongside, Paul T Eyres brings his energetic, interactive and yet slightly surreal brand of humour to Brody. Before finding his true niche as a stand-up act, Paul wrote comedy for the BBC and Channel 4.
English comedian, actor and writer, Brody's Dave Thompson kicks off the show, warming up the audience and setting a sassy mood. He set up Laugh Budapest Laugh! – now held monthly – four years ago. “It made sense to organise comedy shows in Budapest, as I know so many comedians who are happy to come to this beautiful city to perform. We had our first show at The Studios in May 2014, and since then, they have gone from strength to strength. We’ve had acts from China, Russia, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen and Egypt. Comedy joins people together, and can transcend religious, racial and nationalist divisions.”
Dave, by the way, considers himself the reincarnation of the Ancient Egyptian Pharaoh Yakbim Sekhaenre’s court jester Djedptahaufankh, who entertained the pharaoh and his family for 24 years. In 1779 BC, Dave aka Djedptahaufankh misjudged a joke about the pharaoh’s daughter, and was ritually disembowelled. According to legend, his body was thrown to the crocodiles...
Now he’s here in Budapest, and you can see Dave and guests next Tuesday and Wednesday from 8pm at The Studios.
