Our regular round-up for the upcoming weekend offers plenty of suggestions for where to go, what to do and who should not be missed during the next three days. There are always so many happenings to choose from in Budapest – exhibitions, parties, live music, festivals and more – but here is our pick of the bunch:

Friday

11am - 6pm: Lucien and Rodolf Hervé: One-On-One at the Várfok Gallery

The new exhibition at the Várfok Gallery showcases a special selection of photographs taken by father and son,Lucien and Rodolf Hervé. The images not only complement each other, but also highlight the different stylistic characteristics of each photographer. The pairs of photographs emphasise the essential elements of each artist, the sharp differences in their perceptions, but also their common traits, such as social sensitivity and criticism, humour, irony and their affinity with abstraction.

2pm - : Chinese New Year Street Food Festival at the Millenáris Park

Between Friday and Sunday, the Millenáris Park cultural centre hosts an early spring celebration, dedicated to China and promoting its diplomatic relations with Hungary. Organised by the Hungarian-Chinese Association for Arts and Culture, the festival brings a slice of the Far East to Budapest, including an exhibition of calligraphy, tea tasting and a presentation of traditional Chinese medicine. The culinary selection includes the authentic dishes of six Chinese restaurants. Featuring a dragon dance, a Beijing opera piece and authentic street food, this free weekend event allows visitors to delve deeper into Chinese culture and cuisine.

5:30pm - : Amorphis and Soilwork at the Barba Negra Music Club

Finnish progressive metal band Amorphis released their hugely successful new album Queen Of Time in May. To present their new tunes live on stage, they join forces with Swedish Soilwork for a European tour in early 2019. Headliners will be supported by Ukrainian modern metal band Jinjer and German melodic death/doom band Nailed to Obscurity.

8pm - : Mary Queen of Scots Preview at the Puskin Cinema

This costume drama explores the turbulent life of Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan). Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary refuses to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie). Rivals in power and in love, the young queens must decide how to play the intricate game of history. The film screens in English with Hungarian subtitles.

11pm - : Casino Rave: Bjarki, Kyoka at Dürer Kert

Experimental techno DJs, Japanese Kyoka and Icelandic Bjarki, take to the decks of Dürer Kert for a global rave. With two party rooms and many Hungarian guest performers, such as Lau and the musicians of independent record label Exiles, the event is likely to pack the floor of this cult venue near the City Park.

Saturday

8am - 2pm: Czakó Farmer’s Market at Czakó Kert

Czakó Piac is a farmer’s market full of friendly vendors, awaiting visitors in the lovely garden of an old Hungarian peasant house on the Buda side. Stalls offer organic products, vegetables, eggs, mouthwatering meat, handcrafted cheeses, wild mushrooms and countless unique specialities that are not available elsewhere in the capital. The chef at Czakó Kert prepares the best breakfasts and lunchesfrom the delicacies available here while the market is open.

8pm - : Emptyset, Steven Warwick and Aiwa at Trafó

Contemporary electronic musicians take the stage at the Trafó on Saturday. Bristol duo Emptyset explore the physical properties of sound and while Berlin-based Steven Warwick plays melancholic dance tunes. Besides these foreign DJs, the night will also feature Hungarian performer AIWA.

8pm - : No Fun At All at A38

A key figure in the skatepunk-punkrock world of the '90s, Swedish band No Fun At All reformed last April after a near ten-year break. New album Grit is like they never stopped playing, all speedy and fun. No nostalgia here, No Fun At All are just as fresh and lively as ever.

10pm - : Éclipse Totale - Schwefelgelb at Lärm

German techno duo Schwefelgelb release records under such prestigious labels as [aufnahme + wiedergabe] and Fleisch. They’ve played at major clubs all around the globe from London to Tokyo, and on Saturday, they come to Budapest’s Lärm, accompanied by the best Hungarian DJs in the genre.

11pm - 5am: DJ GOZTH all night long at VOLT Lokál

If you're just after a massive party with the latest hits from A$AP Rocky, Cardi B, Chris Brown, Drake, Future, G-Eazy, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Pump, Lil Uzi Vert, Migos, Post Malone, Rae Sremmurd, Rich The Kid, Travis Scott, Tyga, Wiz Khalifa, XXXTentacion and YG, head to the Akvárium Klub on Saturday and shake it all night long.

2pm - : Schindler's List Remastered at the Uránia National Film Theatre

To mark the 25th anniversary of Spielberg's Oscar-winning war-time drama, this classic has been fully digitally remastered and now it's back on the big screen. The film is the true story of businessman Oskar Schindler, who saved more than 1,000 Polish Jews from Auschwitz by employing them in his factories during World War II. Original English audio, Hungarian subtitles.

Noon - 6pm: Community Repair Workshop at Szimpla Kert

Sometimes all you need is a helping hand. On Sunday, you can bring your stuff that need repairing to Szimpla – clothes, bikes, electronics – and a group of people with tools and some expertise will help repair them for you. This is a cool community event, if you think you're good at something and would like to join the workshop, contact Szimpla.

9pm - : American History X at the Bem Cinema

Tony Kaye’s 1998 firecracker American History X is not just a powerful comment on modern society, but it also features an astounding performance by Edward Norton as Derek Vinyard, a neo-Nazi sentenced to three years in prison for killing a black thief. While in jail, he acquires a different outlook on racism and hatred, while his younger brother Danny is eager to follow his footsteps. Frank and honest, American History X offers a compelling portrait of redemption and the destructive nature of racism. And the sidewalk scene... we'll never forget. The movie screens with original English-language audio and Hungarian subtitles.
