On 4 February, the Örkény Theatre is staging an English-speaking performance about the harrowing trauma of the Holocaust, whose annual international memorial is a few days before. During this unique performance in pitch darkness, the actors recite Jewish jokes, songs and documents from the 1930s and 1940s.

“So then the girls ran at the high voltage fence in masses. One of my dear friends from Jászapáti told me: ‘Come, let’s run at the fence together! But I said: are you mad? I’m not running anywhere. But why not? Listen, if I run at the fence and then these nobodies lose the war tomorrow, I’ll be really hacked off in the otherworld.' Whoever heard this around us all started laughing. That day, nobody killed themselves. Just because of one little laugh." – Ágnes Moller

In Ghetto Sheriff, reminisces like the one above, Jewish jokes and songs will be recited in total darkness. The texts of the performance were selected by director János Mohácsi and the actors together, mostly from personal reminisces. Alongside texts from the film Shoah by Claude Lanzmann, several other sources were used, such as case studies, survivor testimonies, literary works, diary notes, historical sources, official reports and personal recollections to evoke the historical period and the atmosphere of Europe at the time. Self-ironic Jewish jokes will also be heard, painting a picture of the same tragic mood through humour.

The play lasts 80 minutes and is performed in total darkness, with no mobile phones or smart watches allowed. The performance starts at 7:30pm and tickets are available here.
