Close to Buda’s popular Mammut mall, a recently opened wine bar offers more than just laidback sipping. At Kóstolom, lesser-known labels and small-batch libations are served with a smile and a casual introduction to wine regions in Hungary and beyond. To understand specific domestic terroirs, some wines are presented alongside the geological attributes that define and explain their character.

It’s a warm vibe that beckons oenophiles who step into Kóstolom, a relaxed hangout for languid sampling of handpicked wines. A U-shaped sofa is best for lingering, while taking a seat by the bar counter might prompt an informative discussion with staff about wine.

This is also a good spot for watching immersive drone videos recorded around Hungary’s wine regions, all made by the Kóstolom team. Seeing these films and touching the geological formations of a given territory displayed here help link the contents of your glass to an area where you might have never been before. Meanwhile, intriguing photos mounted on the wall show famous personalities drinking wine.

What’s not set in stone is the list of libations featured on the menu, listing wines from Pannonhalma, Tokaj, Balaton, Somló, even from Bulgaria and Sicily. For something to eat, cheese varieties, aged hams, sausages and olives are on offer. For those after bubbles, there are champagnes, prosecco and sparkling wines. Beer, whisky and gin are also on the menu.

Check the Kóstolom Facebook page for tasting sessions and live-music events.
