The opening exhibition, Weegee – The Famous features 104 photos by Ukrainian photographer Arthur Fellig, aka Weegee, drawing an intimate portrait of New York in the mid 20th century. In a society distressed by economic and communal depression, Weegee confronted his viewers with loneliness, poverty and crime, at the same time showing moments of beauty and happiness that were also part of life in the Lower East Side, Harlem and the Bowery. Dramatic effects, raw realism and sharp contrast made him a pioneer for generations of photographers to follow. The exhibition is on view until 20 January at the Mai Manó House.
As the human body has always been an exciting subject in the history of photography, Bodyfiction presents the work of young European photographers who make the dialogue between the body and photography aesthetically meaningful. The exhibition is on view until 20 December at the Mai Manó House.
Another exhibition, City Brand, parallels historical and modern photography of two cities of the former Eastern bloc, East Berlin and Budapest. Photos taken of streets and everyday life in East Berlin in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as a modern series presenting ordinary young girls in poses familiar from classical paintings, juxtapose the past and present of these two cities. The exhibition is on view until 3 December at FUGA, the Budapest Center of Architecture.
Other exhibitions, as well as guided tours, talks and other cultural attractions, make the festival complete. See more details here.
