If you don’t speak Hungarian but want to visit the cinema in Budapest, it can be difficult to find out which films are showing in English. Luckily, there are many cinemas and film clubs screening newly released films and classic flicks with English subtitles and/or with the original audio. Each month we share some movies to check out, with links to the show times too, so you’ll know exactly which cinema to head to and when. All you need do is grab some popcorn!
A Viszkis
A Viszkis tells the strange but true story of Attila Ambrus, Hungary’s Whiskey Robber, who became (in)famous for committing 30 robberies around Budapest in the ’90s, each after knocking back a glass – or two – of Johnnie Walker. Ambrus played cat-and-mouse with the authorities for six years, once fleeing a crime scene by diving into the Danube and even escaping from prison, becoming a folk hero in the process. Darkest Hour
This thrilling and inspiring drama begins at the precipice of World War II as, within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Gary Oldman in Oscar nomination form) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: explore a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or stand firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. Labyrinth
Remember magnificent David Bowie as Jareth the devilishly enchanting Goblin King…? No need to say any more, this ’80s fantasy classic was part of our childhood. For those of you whose youth was deprived of this wonderfully weird movie, the story follows 15-year-old Sarah, who wishes for his little baby brother to be taken away. However, when the Goblin King unexpectedly grants her wish, a guilt- and fear-ridden Sarah has to make her way on a rescue mission through a brick maze populated by Muppets. Jareth is back on the big screen, don’t miss.

Pitch Perfect 3
The Bellas are back… after the highs of winning the World Championships, they find themselves divided and discovering there aren’t too many job prospects for this line of work. But when they get the chance to reunite for an overseas tour for US servicemen, this group of awesome misfits come together to make some music, and some questionable decisions, one last time.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi
In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues. Luke’s peaceful and solitary existence gets upended when he encounters Rey, a young woman who shows strong signs of the Force. The Killing of a Sacred Deer
Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos – the director of the intriguing Lobster – is back with one of the most anticipated movies of this winter. Starring Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell, The Killing of a Sacred Deer is like a Rorschach test for all viewers; how you feel about it will likely depend on who and what you identify with when you watch it. In the film, Steven, a charismatic surgeon, is forced to make an unthinkable sacrifice after his life starts to fall apart, when the behavior of a teenage boy he has taken under his wing turns sinister.
