Beginning in early May, travellers can hop across the pond directly to Budapest from New York, Chicago and Philadelphia, while several new flight routes are now operating between Hungary’s capital and cities across Europe ranging from Santander to Stavanger. Budapest Airport also reports that numerous airlines are increasing the frequency of their flights on some popular established routes – including direct connections with Toronto, Istanbul, Helsinki and Moscow – in anticipation of increased air traffic above the Magyar metropolis during summer 2018.

Polish airline LOT launches direct service between New York’s JFK Airport and Budapest Airport on May 3rd, and LOT offers non-stop connections with Chicago O’Hare beginning on May 5th. On the same day, American Airlines debuts daily flights between Hungary’s capital and Philadelphia. These recently added transatlantic routes are complemented by new daily flights with Toronto aboard Air Canada Rouge, which has been operating Budapest Airport’s only long-haul route between North America three times weekly.

These increased transatlantic schedules follow the addition of several new flights launched between Budapest Airport and diverse European cities since mid-March: now passengers can fly here directly from Stavanger and Athens aboard Wizz Air, from Santander and Paphos with Ryanair, and from Kraków with LOT. Wizz Air also introduces a new connection with Basel on May 3rd.

To accommodate soaring ticket sales prompted by Budapest’s increasing popularity as a holiday destination, other airlines are boosting the frequency of established connections during the upcoming summer season. Lufthansa is offering six daily flights between Budapest and Frankfurt, Aeroflot provides three flights with Moscow every day, Turkish Airlines operates three connections daily with Istanbul, and Finnair flies between Helsinki three times daily, among other route-frequency increases.

With these additional flights, Budapest Airport officials anticipate that nearly one million more plane seats will be provided to travellers here between March and October 2018 than during the same period last year. “We have fewer and fewer unserved destinations on the continent, offering an ever-greater choice to both Hungarian and international travellers,” said Kam Jandu, Budapest Airport chief commercial officer.
