Our regular roundup for the upcoming weekend offers plenty of suggestions for where to go, what to do and who should not be missed during the next three days. There are always so many happenings to choose from in Budapest – exhibitions, parties, live music, festivals and more – but here is our pick of the bunch:

Friday

10am - 6pm: Tales of Ata exhibition at the Deák Ferenc Gallery

Until last September, Ata Kandó was the oldest Hungarian female photographer, passing away three days before her 104th birthday. She led an exciting life. She took photos of refugees during Hungary’s 1956 Revolution, lived among the natives in the forests of Venezuela and created dream-like images of her own children. The Deák Ferenc Gallery is presenting a selection of her most evocative work, her photos of children, on view until June 2nd. The exhibition is free.

Honk honk! Between Friday and Sunday, Budapest’s Railway History Park fills with an abundance of century-old motorbikes, cars, trucks, military machines, buses, lorries and steam locomotives. Altogether some 500 extremely rare veteran vehicles will be showcased, originally produced at factories all over the world, with a number of particular curiosities from the USA.

5pm - 7pm: Akvárium Spring Terrace at Erzsébet tér

A warm spring evening, a glass of wine in hand, a group of friends or your special someone and an acoustic alfresco gig in the heart of Budapest. What could sound better? Akvárium Klub on Erzsébet tér presents a special free event series for the month of April – between 1st and 22nd – and shakes up spring evenings with acoustic shows by popular Hungarian musicians and up-and-coming artists held on the steps of the club.

On that note, Telep hosts a second-hand fair on Saturday, where you can spend a fun afternoon browsing and meeting others amid a laid-back atmosphere. Register as a seller in a private message sent to 'Lakásvásár' on Facebook, or show up to browse and buy.

11am – Sakura Celebration at the ELTE Botanical Garden

The Sakura celebration is a traditional annual event at the 200-year-old Botanical Garden of the Eötvös Loránd University, connected to the blooming of Japanese cherry trees in April, and the traditional Japanese celebration, the Hanami. At this time, when the cherry trees blossom here, visitors follow the Japanese tradition and have picnics on blankets amid the garden’s aromatic scene, admiring the blooming sakura trees. ELTE’s Füvészkert awaits visitors on Saturday and Sunday this weekend with cooking workshops, board games, dance performances, reiki sessions, music and martial arts shows.
