This summer, talented local and international artists will again flock to Budapest to further beautify often-dilapidated and drab walls around town with mesmerizing murals, all within the framework of the annual Színes Város Festival. After last year’s water theme, 2017’s event focuses on topics of discourse and dichotomy, drawing inspiration from gastronomy and the intoxicating world of wines. Therefore, by the time that the first autumn leaves start falling on the streets of Budapest, several large city walls will be adorned with gigantic paintings that creatively depict drinks and meals.

Talented contemporary artists from Hungary, Germany, Austria, Spain, Poland, and Great Britain are expected to flock to Budapest this summer to create colorful oversized paintings on city walls all around town. A novelty this year is that Budapest has a partner city for the festival – the uber-creative city of Berlin so several artists from Germany’s capital will beautify Budapest with their amazing artworks, and a Hungarian artist also gets the chance to paint a mural somewhere in Berlin.

Following this festival promoting public artwork, Budapest’s cityscape always changes to become more intriguing, as gray and boring walls around town are made colorful and vivid with captivating artworks. “We are introducing a number of novelties this year: we would like to address Budapest’s residents by involving them in this endeavor to further beautify Budapest and by inviting them to help us pick out the walls to be painted. Our aim is to renovate and adorn several public surfaces with these murals, thus making them more colorful and exciting parts of Budapest,“ said Péter Flór of the Színes Város Group. Everyone is invited to send tips to Színes Város, recommending city walls that should be renovated and shaken up with a colorful mural.
