We already wrote about the rebirth of Budapest’s District VIII, as an increasing number of high-quality hangouts keep popping up here, and now another newcomer set up business: the atmospheric and multifunctional Typo Bar. It is found at one of the corners of the Corvin department-store building that faces Blaha Square, so it is an easily accessible hangout, but separated enough to make it more atmospheric than most new hotspots around town.
The unit is spacious and very bright in the early hours, thanks to large glass surfaces that can also be opened up, and here we can devour our morning espresso (350 HUF) outside on the terrace when the weather is nice. Thanks to the high ceiling, the vintage boutique found upstairs only takes up about a third of the place; this size is unusual in downtown Budapest, as cafés and bars are normally smaller. Perhaps this is why Typo has a certain “Western” feeling.
So what can we expect from Typo? For one thing, tasty breakfasts: a hearty French toast filled with cheddar cheese and ham (990 HUF) keeps us going even after noon, while a cold cut-cheese-olive plate named the Kis Typo is served with fresh vegetables, fruits, and even some marmalade. For this and toast that comes with the dish, we paid 1,190 forints. Furthermore, their coffee is also tasty, and we can even order specialties here like espresso tonic (690 HUF). From noon, they operate as a bistro kitchen, proffering burgers, burritos, sandwiches, and salads. We can have beers on tap here, such as Krusovice, and Mort Subite
Belgian cherry beer, as well as glasses of fine wines. The long-drink assortment is also impressive; the gin fizz is 990 forints, as is the cultic vodka-soda, but we can also order a whole jug of cucumber water that is truly refreshing on sizzling summer nights. The service is attentive and friendly, and when someone orders tomato juice, even though it’s not a Bloody Mary, they still ask with a wide smile if the guest would fancy chewing on a celery stick with their drink.
It is worthwhile to highlight the gallery – here they highlight diverse artists; for instance, this week a display featuring Nikon One’s work decorated the walls. These illustrations suit the image of the place very well, and we look forward to other exhibits in the future, especially because they started with such an intriguing one. The vintage boutique is found on the gallery level, and hopefully will fill the niche that Schatzi! left behind after the expansion of Fogas Ház and Instant. However, browsing clothes while sipping on a cool fröccs is pretty nice. The funky selection features neon jogging tops that could have easily been found in the wardrobe of Dieter Bohlen in the ’80s, as well as carefully embroidered jean jackets, and Levi’s high-waist trousers. Besides secondhand stuff, there are also some designer items, such as H.elix bags, NEUEN pieces, and virágéknál accessories.Considering that this place is brand-new, we only went for one night at the time of the opening party, but we are very curious to see how their programs planned for the future turn out. So far, everything is truly promising.
