As one of the most significant musicians of the Baroque era, Johann Sebastian Bach was born on March 21, 1685. To honor his memory, talented musicians flood the streets of many major cities around the day of his birthday every year, performing his beautiful pieces on public squares and in metro stations for free.
They offer Bach’s music as a present to everyone, to generate more familiarity, interest, and enthusiasm for classical music.Hungary joined this concert series – spanning America to Asia – in 2015. Inspired by the immense success of “Bach in the Subways” in previous years, this year during March 17-19 city dwellers can enjoy wonderful pieces by Bach performed by talented Hungarian musicians citywide. The Great Market Hall, the metro stations of Astoria and Kálvin Square, Szimpla Kert, and the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden will all be transformed into unique urban venues for melodious free gigs all afternoon. Hear Johann Sebastian Bach’s music across Budapest this weekend
As part of a global event series called “Bach in the Subways”, held around the anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach’s birthday, outstanding ensembles honor the memory of the musical maestro with free concerts in many major metropolises. Budapest joins this initiative for the third time this year, filling several metro stations and other public places around downtown with Bach’s fantastic melodies over the weekend. The musicians think of this event – which is free for everyone – as giving the gift of music to passersby, in order to sow the seeds for future generations of classical-music lovers.
