World-famous National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore launched an ongoing project named PhotoArk, aiming to draw attention to animal species that are on the verge of extinction. PhotoArk builds up and maintains a photo database that documents animals at risk in top-quality pictures. Sartore captures close-ups of endangered animals in zoos around the globe, using a sleek monochrome background that essentially reveals the unique personality of each animal, while also enabling viewers to focus on the features, colors, and the beauty of these creatures; he recently visited the Budapest Zoo.

So far, Joel Sartore has been to 40 countries, and captured a total of 6,000 species, but unfortunately the number of endangered species around the world is ever-growing. Sartore also visited the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, where he took photos of more than 100 of the nearly 900 species for the PhotoArk database. At the Budapest Zoo, there are several rare animals that are not found in other zoos, such as the dama gazelle that is already extinct in its natural habitat, but still breeds here in Hungary’s capital. Besides the dama gazelle, a Syrian brown bear, a Persian leopard, and several insects and nativeHungarian birds were also caught by Sartore’s lens. The photographer encourages everyone to love and pay attention to these animals, as well as to contribute their part to reducing the number of imperiled species on Earth.
