At first it might seem strange to mix cheese with beer, as normally we munch on quality cheeses when devouring a glass of delicious wine, but the newly opened Sörsajt eatery on József Boulevard in District VIII abandons such traditions, and instead entice patrons with an impressive selection of international brews paired with succulent cheeses.

If you understand enough Hungarian to know that “sör” means beer and “sajt” means cheese, you don’t have to be a linguistics professor to figure out what you get upon entering Sörsajt – yes, beer and cheese. And some coffee and sandwiches.

“We didn’t want to open a place where people come in to stand at the bar and binge on numerous glasses of beer one after the other. Our main focus is actually on beer, but we would like to offer an alternative for snacks instead of popcorn and pretzel sticks. We would like to combine beer and cheese,” says Norbert Merkle, the owner of Sörsajt.

Let’s start with their delicious drinks, as the main specialty of Sörsajt is offering the beers of small breweries. The selection of the 20 taps stretches from the classic German Maisel wheat beer, to an IPA from Möszjő, the Way to El Diablo. For sizzling-hot summer days we recommend the owner’s own beer, Lados Meggyes – which is a fruity sour-cherry-flavored beer – especially as a pint costs 650 HUF, which is significantly cheaper than other famous fruity beers. The price of the specialty brews ranges between 500-700 HUF, which is truly friendly for the quality level.Inside we find a “beer wall” that helps anyone discover the origins of their drinks. The bottom bit explores the world of beers brewed with bottom-fermenting yeast, lagers, while above, the roots of ales – beers brewed with top-fermenting yeast – are revealed.

The selection of succulent cheeses is mostly made up of imported pieces at the moment (from France, Spain, and Italy), but they will soon expand the cheese menu – yes, they have one – with the products of local producers. Guests find some information about each type of cheese on the menu, and a beer recommendation that goes well with that certain variety.

The assortment is enhanced with cheese fondue. They make this flavorsome Swiss specialty with cheddar cheese and its perfect pair, some brown beer.

Guests can also order a breakfast menu that includes a sandwich and a coffee. They can top our sandwich (490 HUF) with blue cheese, mozzarella, or goat cheese, and also with some ham. From their cheese menu we tasted an old appenzeller that qualifies as a heavy cheese, so it is served with walnut, dried fruit, and salty crackers. The combination of it results in a truly exquisite experience – especially if there’s something tasty to wash it down with, which is easy to find at Sörsajt.
