GRANDPA was founded by Annamari Nagy, who first got interested in fashion design during her years at Mod’Art, which was followed by years of studying in Paris. That’s when the idea of the GRANDPA brand came, when she was thinking about her diploma work. According to Annamari, all of her collections were inspired by a profession. For example: the work of her father, who is an auto-body mechanic, served as the starting point last year’s autumn/winter collection. The colors, the accessories, and the close-fitting sleeves can be traced back to the usual uniforms of the auto-body profession. The boots not only seem like they are made for work, they are manufactured at a factory where they make real work boots.
In terms of materials, the two primary ones are denim and cotton, but some parts are made out of corduroy. Sweaters are hand-knit, the shoes and bags are made out of real leather, so natural materials dominate the collections. And although you can find deep-blue repairman overalls in GRANDPA’s repertoire, most of the pieces are for everyday wear. Why did Annamari start to design clothes for men? Because they were a part of her life since childhood. Many of us inherited clothes from older siblings regardless of what gender they were made for, and the same thing happened with Annamari. In the end, she became so attached to these clothes, that she made an entire collection based on them. It isn’t a surprise that she likes to wear them herself.Don’t be misguided by the brand name: the pieces of GRANDPAaren’t only for those who’re ready to retire. Instead, the name was chosen because grandpas are usually respected by everyone – they are strong, self-confident, and don’t need to follow the latest trends, because they follow their own taste. The aim of the brand is the same: to encourage its wearers to be true to their own style – which many Hungarian men still need to learn how to do. The new autumn/winter collection is now available at downtown Budapest’s recently opened Antonym concept store.
