BRKLYN has been bewitching Budapest with great parties on Kazinczy Street for just over a year now, so we already know that this is a cool and laid-back locale with tasteful music and delicious drinks. However, now all of this is enhanced with mouthwatering meals thanks to the freshly-opened on-site eatery, The Market. We popped into the opening event, and had a quick chat with the creator of the delectable dishes, renowned Magyar chef András Wolf. The concept is smart but simple, shaken up with a few twists – for example, savory barbecue specialties are the star attraction on the menu.

BRKLYN just turned one year old in August, and they definitely didn’t waste any time during the past year. Soon after the opening, the management warmly welcomed spring with a brand-new terrace that was finished in only five days, and by summertime the rooftop bar was ready for hot nights – and nowthey launched an exciting “market restaurant”. Just to avoid any confusion, The Market is found inside BRKLYN, so from Wednesday to Saturday, guests can even start the evening with a late-afternoon meal at Kazinczy Street 48, and then stick around to party until sunrise.

The Market’s kitchen has only been operating for a short time, but it is already gaining a lot of fans, so reserving a table during the weekend might be a real challenge. It seems like everyone is curious about the new eatery, and browsing through the menu, we really are not at all surprised. This is due to BRKLYN’s main manager, Norbert Mancza, and András Wolf – the renowned Magyar chef of Salon Restaurant and New York Café. Before the hustle and bustle of the opening event, we managed to catch András for a quick chat, and he told us about the restaurant’s concept while wearing his chef uniform and a wide smile. We learned that they build on two things: the market – with its freshness, colorfulness, and community feel – and the barbecue.

We also found out that they do not prepare everything from scratch themselves; they love “marketing”, which in this case means seeking the best producers, so when they put the ingredients together, the result is a truly high-quality meal. This is how they came across Örház Grill & BBQ in the small Hungarian town of Tahitótfalu, who provides The Market with smoked meats, as well as inspiring sometimes-wild ideas; for example, the barbecue pineapple served at the opening event.

However, barbecue isn’t the only type of food available at The Market – we can always choose a bowl of anchovy penne with mascarpone sauce enhanced with special Hungarian Vászoly cheese, followed by lavender yogurt, fresh fruits and roasted oats for dessert.

However, we can safely say that the superstar is still the barbecue, which comes through in their chicken soup, burgers, and sandwiches. On Thursdays, alongside the permanent menu selection, they will always have an extra ingredient on offer that they prepare in BBQ style. During our chat we quickly found out that they are full of ideas, and they are always in an experimental mood, so the current selection will definitely change in the future. If you’d like to try the pork with crispy potatoes, a honey pork bacon with salad and celery cooked in fat, or anything else from the current selection, feel free to make a reservation.

Located in the middle of downtown’s party quarter, BRKLYN could “just be” a cool club, but they definitely aim for something more than that. They do not wish to be another station in the wild Budapest party nights, but a reliable spot where guests can return for crazy parties, as well as romantic dates or laid-back dinners with friends. If you’re looking for a dinner spot in downtown Budapest, The Market definitely deserves a mark on your imaginary culinary map.
