Up until now, relatively few people were aware about its existence, but now Sirály Promenade is becoming a pleasant place for urban relaxation. Tucked between the MOM Park mall, a historic cultural center, and a chestnut orchard, this spacious plaza provides a nice urban oasis for sunbathing at midday, sitting down for an afternoon fröccs, or beginning a night out over a beer or three. With its sweeping views and acoustic concerts, this lovely outdoor terrace just might become one of this summer’s best destinations.

This recently renovated space is found across the street from MOM Park in front of the MOMCultural Center – an attractive building designed by renowned 20th-century Magyar architect Károly Dávid, who also created the blueprints for Puskás Stadium and the sadly decommissioned Terminal 1 of Budapest Airport, all considered as Budapest cultural monuments by now.

Not long ago, the area surrounding the MOM Cultural Center was left in a state of neglect, while the garden next to the building was mostly known for its weekend bio markets. However, after some innovative renovations and the successful launching of an outdoor film-screening series held here, the Sirály Promenade is becoming nicely populated almost every evening.

Near to Csörsz Street, we can find a cart loaded with used books here – including English-language tomes – all in good condition and offered for a very friendly price of 300 forints each. In the evenings, acoustic concerts are held here amid colorful chairs and a playing mat for kids occupying the center of the plaza, adding to the appeal of the promenade for families during the daytime and evening.

We do not have to go far if – after sunbathing or enjoying the open-air cinema – we grow hungry, or would like to drink a fröccs wine spritzer. A beautifully restored Citroën minibus sometimes appears in the middle of the square to offer refreshments, and on the side of the Gesztenyéskert orchard, we can sit down on comfortable pallet furniture.

The fresh pretzels available here are excellent when enjoyed with a few drinks, making this a perfect place for watching the sunset over the nearby Buda Hills. This is also a perfect place for enjoying Aperol Spritz cocktails at the stylish open-air bar set up here to specialize in this delicious summertime refresher.

We would not be surprised if this promenade became one of the new outdoor favorites for Buda residents this summer – and while this location is a bit difficult to access from downtown, anyone planning to go to MOM Park for a movie or some shopping should certainly take the time to enjoy at least a short stroll here.
