Whether you're a fitness fanatic or you just like the idea of completing something inspirational, you're sure to find the kind of race you're after in Budapest or regional Hungary. The calendar is packed with running, cycling and swimming events from walks to full-on marathons and epic cross-country rides. One race even gets participants muddy in a brutal obstacle course, which is a mammoth challenge for the fittest among us. No matter your style or fitness level, it's time to get your sports gear on and get training. Make 2015 the year you really challenge yourself!

March19-22 March: SPURI Balaton Super Marathon There are seven different running events, so you can come for just one or two days or the whole event. And of course you don't have to run the full marathon, with loads of different options and even the chance to run as a relay.
Details here (in Hungarian) or in English here. 28 March: Coca-Cola Testébresztő Fitnesz Nap This "awaken the body fitness day" is obviously all about fitness! Head along for some group exercise classes, some yoga or other fun physical activities. Details here (in Hungarian).

April18-19 April: Telekom Vivicittá Városvédő Futás
A number of running events across two days, there's a 3km, 7km or 10km run, plus a half marathon option. Then there's also a 3km walk and a family run, which is only about 800 metres. Details here (in Hungarian) or in English here.

May9 May: Intersport Tour de Tisza-tó
Love cycling in the beautiful Hungarian countryside? Head to the Tisza Lake for this bike-athon. Details here (in Hungarian).

17 May: Coca-Cola Testébresztő Női Futógála The "awaken your body women's run" is a great event for women. There are 10km, 5km and 2km options (or you can run all three). It starts at City Park in Budapest. Details here (in Hungarian) or in English here.

31 May: K&H mozdulj! kerékpáros nap Gárdony A beautiful setting at the Velence Lake and the absolute option of a leisurely pace, take this 28 kilometre ride in the sunshine and enjoy some late spring fresh air. The ride is not too difficult but it will definitely be rewarding! Starts at the Gárdony Sport Beach. Details here (in Hungarian).

June6 June: KPMG Kékes Csúcsfutás This is one of the most beautiful and more challenging runs in Hungary. The run is 11.6km long and is in a hilly area so be prepared for different altitudes. The run has a time-limit with those running needing to be able to run at least a 9 minute kilometre. Details here (in Hungarian). 14 June: K&H mozdulj! maraton- és félmaratonváltó
This half marathon and marathon starts at 56-osok Square in Budapest. There's also the chance to do the run in teams with a three and four-person relay option. Of course the marathon itself is 42.2 kilometres but the shorter runs are just a portion of this depending on which option you choose. The latest you can apply for the race is June 11, so get your runners on! Details here (in Hungarian). 20 June: Burger King Brutálfutás 4.0
Don't let the 7km length fool you, this so-called "brutal run" is exactly as the name suggests. Crawl in mud under barbed wire, climb over hay bales and challenge yourself over various obstacles. It's the longest 7 kilometres of your life but the sense of achievement at the end is worth every drop of sweat and blood. Located at Nyáregyháza at the MotoCross course. Délibáb Terepfesztivál

There are a few different events a 7km, a 14km and a half marathon in this run that takes you through some scenic parts of the famous Hungarian region of Hortobágy. Details here (in Hungarian). 11 July:

Délibáb Mountain Bike Maraton és Bringatúra

In the same location as the aforementioned event for those who prefer cycling to running, there's a mountain bike marathon or a more leisurely bike tour course. Details here (in Hungarian). 11 July: Délibáb Teljesítménytúra és Gyaloglás And finally, for those wanting to soak up the atmosphere of this magic day and this glorious region there's also a walk so that you too can share in the sense of achievement. In August it'll be hot, hot, hot so it's time to jump in the water. Head to Velence Lake and go for a swim. Details have not yet been finalised for this event, but you can check back here for updates.
September13 September: Wizz Air Budapest Félmaraton
Do the half-marathon alone, in a pair or in a trio or just do the "Ligetkör" - the route around City Park. This is one of Europe's most popular half-marathons, probably because of the scenic route and the inspirational atmosphere. Starting at City Park, there are limits for the average time it takes you to run a kilometre, so make sure you check out the details here (in Hungarian) or in English here, and start training!

October10-11 October: SPAR Budapest Maraton Fesztivál There'll be about 8 different events so no matter your fitness level and your mood you can take part in the Budapest Marathon Festival. There'll be mini runs, walks, family runs, and of course the marathon! If you don't feel like taking part you could always just head along to watch, cheer on the runners and get inspired for next year. November7 November: Intersport Túranap
Go for a hike before the weather gets too chilly for the great outdoors. Details are not yet available, but check back here as details are released.

14-15 November: Balaton Maraton és Félmaraton The Lake Balaton marathon and half-marathon organisers have not yet released details.December6 December: Mikulásfutás While details have not yet been released for this year's event, this is a fun pre-Christmas "race" where runners swap their sports gear for a Santa outfit. It's a must if you're a fan of running and Santa. Suits are provided, and if this photo isn't enough inspiration than you might be the Grinch that stole Christmas!
