A few decades ago, the founders of the Ludwig Museum, Peter and Irene Ludwig, created one of the most significant collections of pop art. Today, the significant trend of the 60s and 70s is being rediscovered and reinterpreted again. The blockbuster travelling exhibition will bring some of the best examples of pop art to Budapest for a limited time only.

The German art collector couple were among the first to recognise the importance of pop art; so in the museums they founded, we can see the work of the genre’s most famous artists. Now, we will be able to see the collection pieces, that are otherwise exhibited in different cities (Cologne, Aachen, Koblenz, Basel, Budapest, Wien, Beijing), in the one place within the framework of a traveling exhibition.

The exhibition of the Museum Moderner Kunst – Siftung Ludwig Wien (mumok) opened just a few days ago. The museum, located in the heart – and on four floors – of the MuseumsGuartier, exhibits the works of famous artists like Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Tom Wesselmann and Andy Warhol.

One of the most anticipated pieces of the exhibition is the work of Claes Oldenburg, titled Mouse Museum, which is a rare sight in museums because of its massive size and complex structure. The two boxes giving place to the smaller collection pieces will occupy half a floor in the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art.

One stop of the traveling exhibition will be at the Ludwig Museum and the exhibition will be on display from 2 October 2015 to January 2016. It will feature a total of sixty artworks, with a combined value is more than 50 billion forints (180 million US dollars).
