It looks like Critical Mass will be held again this year - just with a different name. The immensely popular group cycling event began back in 2004, and by 2013 more than 100,000 people turned up to participate in the mass cycling event. While the event was not held last year having reached "critical mass," the event - now renamed I Bike Budapest - will return this year. Once again there promises to be a huge group of cyclists riding together.

Cyclists in Budapest are expected to come together in huge numbers for this cycling session on April 25. This year's initiative is very similar to Critical Mass.

There has been strong demand for the return of the event, despite the previous initiative having reached its goal. Organisers are thinking of extending the ride to about a 19 km long ride with the following route: Bakáts Square - Pest Quay to Hotel Hélia - Dózsa György Street - Heroes’ Square - Andrássy Avenue - Oktogon - Grand Boulevard - Rákóczi Street - Elizabeth Bridge - Tunnel - Chain Bridge - Pest Quay - Margaret Bridge - Margaret Island. This is special because there has not yet been bike riding on Margaret Island before. Naturally, anyone can join or leave the ride at any point, or even take shortcuts.

The organisers would not like to hold a Critical Mass nostalgia event, but instead a new kind of spring cycling event, with the message that Budapest is a bicycle-friendly city.

Hundreds of posters and stickers will be distributed in connection with this event, which will hopefully spread the news throughout the city. If you want to know more go to I Bike Budapest’s Facebook page or Tumblr.
