Nowadays, Budapest is often referred to as the new Berlin, and as one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The artistic, urban and social initiatives that shaped the cultural life of Hungary in 2014 play a vital role in this conclusion. More and more people like to walk among the tenements of the city, a lot of movie-lovers think the year's best film was a Hungarian one, and the Hungarian girl, who photographed throughout New York became the favourite of many, as well.

Hungary's creativeindustry produces numerous successful and recognised projects year after year. Super Channel deals with the value management of the creative scene, and has organised Highlights of Hungary for the second time, this year. The ten Audience Award winners will be chosen from the 44 projects that the curators selected. These include an Oscar-nominated cartoon, gif theater, community film and an eco riverboat. We can vote for the best production until January 31 on the event’s website, and the awards ceremony will be held on February 5 at the Toldi Club.

Highlights of Hungary aims to establish a platform with a professional basis that gives a colourful picture of the yearly successes and results of Hungary’s creative sector while engaging the general public and avoiding categories. The intention of the organisers is to reach a broader public with these artistic successes, and to give a larger social basis for creative professions. “This city became exciting because of bottom-up organised, inspiring initiatives. We can see the same happening now in Budapest that already took place in Berlin a few years ago, but with particularly interesting, eclectic characteristics. This has positive economic, cultural and social implications, as well,” says Tibor Remete, the manager of Super Channel.

Among the ten curators, we can find institution directors, publishers, journalists, businesspeople and exhibition organisers, as well. Accordingly, the appointed initiatives are rather diverse. However, we can observe some trends among the nominees. Several candidates appointed initiatives dealing with important social issues: homeless people, women’s education, or even young people dealing with autism. There are numerous candidates in this year’s list who shape the visual appearance of Budapest’s most exciting corners, and there are also two organisations that achieved success in the Hungarian music scene as independent institutions. In addition to the candidates that focus on Budapest, we can notice that enterprises that promote and re-invent food production, wine-growing traditions and the rural / eco lifestyle were very important for the curators, as well. Interestingly, these bottom-up projects that range from moving images and fashion statements to gastronomy are not only successful in Hungarian circles, but internationally as well.

Highlights of Hungary not only allows the people of the creative industry to receive publicity and to build a network across different professions, but also serves as a platform where people of the business world can learn about the creators and concept owners of these projects.

The films VAN valami furcsa és megmagyarázhatatlan (“For Some Inexplicable Reason”) and BUÉK (in English "Happy New Year"), and the book series Little Hungaropedia are also among the candidates.

The curators include:

Gergely Nagy Böszörményi (Design Terminal), Judit Osvárt (Design Week Budapest), Márton Jedlicska (Isobar), József Martinkó (Octogon Magazine), Veronika Pistyur (Bridge Budapest), István Száraz (We Love Budapest / vs.hu), Levente Trellay (Faun Project/Telep), András Unger (Urban Player), Nóra Winkler (Artmagazin) and Super Channel.
