What makes the genre of opera so popular? Perhaps because it’s a refined art form that elicits so much emotion? Perhaps because going to the opera is a glamorous occasion – a chance to snap out of the everyday, to dress up and visit the beautiful opera building. Then there are the storylines that can take you to faraway places, yet remain relatable because of the age-old human emotions and situations they deal with. We spoke to the Hungarian State Opera’s General Director Szilveszter Ókovács to find out how this classical cultural institution is trying to introduce opera to fresh audiences.
