No one plans to be in a tricky situation but it's good to know that if anything bad happens there is help available. Whether your passport has been lost or your wallet has been stolen, here are some important numbers as well as where to find local police that can help you in English.

Although Budapest is generally safe, it’s really worth paying special attention to your wallet and phone especially in busy places like on the metro and trams, or on busy shopping streets like Váci Street.

Some general tips to keep safe include:

* Avoid getting ripped off - don’t exchange forints with street vendors * Make sure you check your change * Don't fall for the tourist trap - check restaurant menus for prices before ordering * Avoid scams by not following strangers into clubs (even if it's a beautiful woman) * Avoid pickpockets - make sure your wallet, phone and other possessions are securely put awayImortant phone numbersPolice - 112 (assistance in English and some other foreign languages too) The Hungarian National Tourist Office can provide assistance to general questions such as if you are lost.

They can also help you locate the nearest police office and help you with how to report a crime. Both the hotline +36 1 438 8080 and the information point (Deák Ferenc Square, 1052 Budapest, Sütő Street 2.) are open from 8am - 8pm.

Police stationsThere are no longer tourist police points in Budapest, however, each district has its own police station where you can go for assistance. It's unlikely the police will be able to help immediately in a foreign language, but a translator can be called in to assist. If emergency police assistance is required on site then call 112 where you can get assistance in English as well as some other foreign languages.

If something has been stolen, aside from speaking to the police it might also be worth speaking to your travel insurance company as soon as you can. Some insurance companies have policies on how soon after the theft it must be reported and other requirements.
