Sample fine gins, rums and vodkas at Schrödinger macskája in Budapest’s party zone
Yes, you guessed it – the name translates as Schrödinger’s cat, a famous experiment by an Austrian scientist and now Budapest’s latest spirits bar. But this doesn’t mean that when you enter this District VII watering hole you’ll be dead and alive at the same time – you’ll just be surrounded by an impressive selection of quality spirits from around the world.
A pleasant, sleek interior, some soothing music, comfortable seats, a cool vibe and an impressive selection of spirits. Everything here encourages you to knock back a few glasses before even trying to understand Erwin Schrödinger’s experiment. And, if you’d rather concentrate on something else, owner-bartender Martin Schlnágl is happy to guide you around the world of high-quality spirits at this new District VII bar.
This may involve 35 types of rum, 12 gins, six tequilas and mezcals, 16 kinds of whisky, liqueurs, cognacs and craft beers, many so special they are hardly available at your everyday bar. As Martin thinks it looks better, these are served in 3- and 5cl glasses. From the drinks list, Martin picks out Ketel One vodka from the Netherlands, Ciroc manufactured with grapes from the Charente-Maritime region of France, and the rums. Santa Teresa is a blend of rums aged between five and 35 years, the Mauritian Lazy Dodo is named after the unfortunate bird while Plantation is the best of the best.
You can also sample gins and tequilas, the latter strictly without lemon and salt or orange and cinnamon as Corralejo and Don Julio are both renowned Mexican brands of quality.
The interior is a bit art deco with rose-gold colours, grey walls and a touch of Belle Époque about it. Everything has been conceived by a trusted designer, the only slightly strange feature being the bar hidden behind a wall, which gives the seating area a secluded and secretive feel. As that particular wall is structural, this was probably the best solution.
Schrödinger macskája is a cool and sleek bar, ideal for a few drinks and a natter or for a warm up before a big night out.
