Budapest to stage grand start of cycling’s Giro d’Italia in 2020
One of the most prestigious races in world cycling, the Giro d’Italia will set off from Budapest in 2020. Dating back to 1909, this historic sports event sees riders covering the whole of Italy, lakes and Alps included, in a bid to win that day’s coveted pink jersey. Along with the Grande Partenza send-off, Hungary will be hosting two more of the 20-plus stages, dates and details to be confirmed.
One of the three grand tours in world cycling, including the Tour de France and Vuelta a España, the Giro d’Italia takes place over three weeks. As announced at a press conference in Budapest, the Hungarian capital will host the start of the 2020 event next May.
According to Giro d’Italia Director, Mauro Vegni: “This Grande Partenza from Hungary is going to be really special. It will be the 14th time that the Giro d’Italia has started outside Italy and the first time it will start from this part of Europe. There will be three stages on Hungarian soil: the first will start from the capital and we will reveal the routes of the other stages soon. I am sure that Hungary will welcome us in the best possible way and that the Giro d’Italia, as it always does, will embrace the whole nation with its passion”.
Budapest is in good company – other host start cities have included Monte Carlo, Nice and Amsterdam. Watch this space for further details on when and where to watch next year’s race!
